Do you have the just the right support network in place for you?
Look around you now. Do you have people in your life on a daily basis who support your dreams, your goals and your daily activities? Do these people make you laugh, make you smile and help you feel better about yourself? Are these people able to truly listen to your needs, especially it when it comes to your work?
Why is this critical?
Many of us start to question our work after we turn 40, and it can seem threatening to those around us. After all, think about all the years you left early in the morning for work, and came home late at night. You made a good income and never seemed to complain much. Why the sudden need to change NOW, at your age? Well, this is exactly the time when change is needed most. While most jobs and organizations are only concerned about productivity and being effective, those over 40 want more freedom, meaning and clarity in their work. They want to know WHY they are doing the work, and what difference it is making for themselves, and in the greater world.
With the right support network at this point in your life, new ideas can flourish, new dreams can become real, and new energy for life becomes available.
What happens without the right support network?
People go under. They bury their dreams for “someday” (which never comes). They convince themselves to continue doing the same old routine work, and hope that, by some magic, a good fairy will show up with a wand and make things better. If you are honest with yourself, you know this won’t happen.
Do you fire those around you?
You might have to. Does your support network help you move forward towards what you want, or does it hold you back? If the people in your life are holding you back, you will need a new team. Eliminating those in your life who are holding you back is just as important. If the people holding you back happen to be your immediate family, then an urgent meeting is necessary. In this meeting, as in any business meeting, you must tell them you are in a crisis.
Through much reflection, you have discovered that your work no longer fits you. It is time for a new direction. You ask for support and understanding. You explain that, with or without that support, you must go forward with your new ideas and plans. Let them know that if you don’t, you are sure you will die sooner then you planned. Explain that you will do your best to minimize the impact, but you expect that changes will be required. In the short term, there will be a need to downscale the financial requirements of life to accommodate this next journey. If you find you do not have the support you need, you will have to deal with it sooner or later. I suggest that you should set a date within twelve months to do this.
Take the first steps now to build the right network for you.
Make a list of new people you could meet, and or network with, who are interested in the same things you are interested in (your passions) This should be a short list, perhaps six people. Make sure you stay in touch with them weekly. You can meet these people in your neighborhood, in on-line discussion groups, and or at networking events. Make a second list of people who are both interested and supportive in what you want to do. These people will bring you ideas as you start your journey. You’ll need about three of these people. You might have to hire someone - it all depends. You want three people who are not only doing what you want to do and but who are also willing to give you ideas and resources to help on your journey. You can take a class; buy a product, sign up for a newsletter - there are many activities that will help you obtain these ideas. The third step is to find someone who believes in you and your work. This is a person who you might have to pay initially, but who does what you love to do, has great ideas and or products you could use, and - most importantly - sends you business. This is a person who becomes your mentor, your friend, your coach - someone who is interested in your welfare and your success.
What about those you fired?
You won’t have time to worry about the OLD team. You will be too busy building your NEW team. At this stage you won’t be looking back. You will have begun to build your new life and your new work.
What’s at stake?
If you don’t take action after 40 to discover and do the work you love, your life will become routine, dull and lacking in passion. This is the sure path to retirement, followed by a quick death. If you do take action, suddenly you will have new passion and new purpose for your life, and those in it. You will cherish each day and totally use each one. The best way to get started and to build momentum is with the efforts of a new team, a new support network.
Examine your team now.
Fire those members who will not be useful for the next stage of your journey, and build a new team that will be just perfect for you - right now.
As always, I’ll be cheering you on as you go

There are people in life who are exceptional actors, actors who could make you believe just about anything. Then, there are actors who aren’t necessarily horrible, but their tendency to overact makes them about as believable as the Easter Bunny. Take myself, for instance, I am an overactor. I can’t appear in front of an audience without overacting. I can’t even stretch the truth without being completely dramatic. For me, it’s a shame: I like to be on stage….and I really like to lie.
I am not alone in my tendency to overact. Our television and movie screens are filled with overacting men and women (and sometimes dogs (seriously Benji, let’s tone down the whimpering)), overacting actors who take drama and make it a little too dramatic. The following is our list for the Most Overacting Actors, those who need a script for a chill pill.
David Caruso, CSI: David Caruso was good on NYPD Blue (good for all five minutes he was a cast member), but there is just something about his role in CSI that makes me want to slip him a Xanaz. With his deep voice, perpetually sunglassed face, and a tendency to speak a little too slowly and articulate a little too much, Caruso makes CSI raise the intensity level. But, then again, maybe that’s the point.
Vincent D’Onofrio, Criminal Intent: Like David Caruso, I have really liked Vincent D’Onofrio in his previous work (Mystic Pizza forever, Vinnie), but he maintains a very obscure quality on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. In scenes where he is undercover as a married man, he comes across as gay, in scenes where he is supposed to pretend he is on the criminal’s side, he comes across as patronizing, and in scenes where he is supposed to be happy…well, frankly, ya just can’t tell. He nearly appears to be one emotion, all the time.
Tom Cruise: Hopefully, he can handle the truth. It isn’t that I think Tom Cruise is horrible at acting, he just doesn’t make certain roles all that believable. Well, that and he plays seemingly the same guy in most of his films. He’s fine in movies like Top Gun or Risky Business (i.e., movies where he just needs to smile pretty for the camera), but could he pull off a role like Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman? No way. Oh well, at least he always has Scientology to fall back on…or whatever.
William Shatner, Star Trek: Though I absolutely love him in Boston Legal, he makes this list for his role in Star Trek. Sorry Willie, you’ve been beamed up. In this science fiction series, he became known for narration laden in drama and odd, long pauses………………….yes, kind of like that. Though this overacting is often parodied, you have to give Shatner credit: his acting style thrives in comedic roles and he looks pretty darn good for his age.
Keanu Reeves: First of all, let me apologize to all the Bill and Ted lovers out there. You’re right, that movie was, in a word, excellent. In fact, I believe that was one of Keanu’s best jobs as an actor. I don’t assert this because he gave a heartfelt performance or because the role he played was on par with Jack Nicholson’s Randle Patrick McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I say this instead because it was one role where he wasn’t overwhelmingly stoic; it was a role that made him real. Did we believe that he was a high school slacker about to be sent to military school? Yes. Did we believe he was “the one” who could save the human race from slavery? Uh, not really

We all hope that the Heat turn themselves up and take-off on a course to repeat as NBA champions. But, so far, the chances look questionable at best. As is always the case during a tumultuous season, it is helpful to have some good places to go after (or even before) the game to celebrate, lament, and speculate on the outcome of future matches. To that end, I submit to you some of the best places to go in the area around American Airlines Arena.
#1 - Finnegan’s Too: The Finnegan’s on Ocean Drive is a lot busier, with a lot more tourists, and that makes Finnegan’s Too one of my favorite places to go prior to or after a Heat game. The selection of beers is decent, there are pool tables, and the drinks are stiff and none-too pricey. The low-key, generally low noise atmosphere makes it easier to talk about the game.
#2 - Pogies Pizza: Only a half mile away from the AAA, Pogies is a nice, casual restaurant that has great food, good beer, and satellite TV. It’s a great place to go when you want some decent food before or after a game, and don’t want to pay the often-exorbitant stadium-food prices. Pogies also has some nice outdoor seating, which can be a welcome change to the arena atmosphere.
#3 - Wesley’s Sports Bar: Wesley’s is a bit out of the way, but it’s a great place to go if you’re in the mood to party after a game. It’s really half-club, half-sports bar, and it does both admirably. Monday nights feature football, while Tuesday’s feature music, often by local bands. Weekends at Wesley’s see a DJ spinning hip-hop, and often a crowded dance floor. It’s a great place to go to celebrate a big victory - hopefully this year will see a few of those for the Heat.
Well, there you have it - a smattering of choices (fairly) near American Airlines Arena. Root for the Heat, and don’t go thirsty!

So you’ve heard about online dating, maybe even browsed a few online dating sites but you’ve not actually taken the plunge and set up your personal ad and given it a try? Are you, like many others, making excuses for not doing it? Are you a little nervous, or perhaps worried about what people might think? Here are some of the reasons people give for not giving it a try and the reasons why I think you should.
I’ll do it when the kids are older; OK, how much older? Anyone would be wary of starting out dating again with children to consider. It is natural to be concerned about bringing someone new in to their lives, particularly if there has been a difficult break up with their other parent. But most children will be happy to see you happy again. If your kids are stopping you moving on with your life, ask yourself; Is it really them or are you using them as an excuse. There is lots of advice available for anyone who is dating as a single parent so you are definitely not alone.
I’ll just wait and see if anyone turns up Well, you could be lucky but not many of us meet the partner of our dreams by waiting for them to knock on our front door. By starting out with online dating, you’re simply allowing yourself to meet a larger circle of people and increase your chances of finding your ideal mate. When you’re doing everything you can and having fun in the process, someone will turn up just when you’re least expecting them and you might just meet some really nice people in the process.
Why would anybody want me? If you haven’t had much dating success or have been involved in a relationship break-up then it can be hard to see yourself as the object of someone else’s desire. The truth is that someone will want to love you and you are their perfect partner. Online dating gives you ‘exposure’ to many more people than conventional dating ever could and one of the millions of people online will be attracted to you. Even if you don’t find them attractive think how good it will be for your ego!
I don’t have time; Really? You have no time to find someone to spend the rest of your life with? You must have a very exciting life for everything in it to be more important! Obviously there are some things that have to be done but surely your happiness should take some priority in your life. Make some time and give it a try, after all you have nothing to lose.
Online dating is dangerous; There are some risks associated with online dating but there are risks associated with meeting anyone anywhere. There are also plenty of ways to minimise personal risk. There are plenty of places you can look to find out about online dating safety to find the best ways to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. But remember, most people are genuine, so after you’ve taken all sensible precautions, relax and have fun.
There really is no good reason for not giving online dating a try. It’s socially acceptable these days, opens up a world of potential dates quite literally and can be a whole lot of fun. If you are in a rut or simply disillusioned then give online dating a try, spend some time and effort getting your personal ad right and enjoy yourself, you know you want to!

I’d been living in Japan for a few years after giving up my Police career as a Detective in Melbourne, Australia. I was fluent in Japanese and had done a number of TV programs here in Japan, when my future turned from TV to Radio.
One day I bumped into a guy who I went to school with when I was an exchange student for one year here in Niigata, Japan. He’d gotten into the dating business and asked me if I would be the MC at the dating parties which are where guys and girls come together and exchange profiles and get to meet each other. It’s good because it gives them an opportunity to meet others.
Unknown to me, a female spy from one of the other dating groups in town had joined the party to see how we run our parties. Luckily I was the MC at that party. She turned out to be a high spirited person, and a person who was to be my partner for 18 months on radio. Her name was Ryoko Mizobuchi.
Ryoko whilst now working for her dating company had previously worked on radio as a DJ and wanted to return to radio. A new radio station covering the whole of the Niigata Prefecture was about to start and was advertising for staff. Without phoning the station for an appointment she went to the station burst through the doors and asked for a job as a DJ.
Ryoko got the job and the owner of the production company for the radio station asked her if she knew any foreigners that spoke Japanese well. She told him of me and one other guy. Now the guy I was doing the MC dating work for rang me and said, “I’m going to do a dating corner on this new radio station called FM Port, Niigata. The corner will be about love and dating and I want you to do the corner on the radio, so come with me to FM Port to talk with production company boss.
I went with him to FM Port and for the 30 minutes we were there the boss of the production company spoke to me about lots of things. I didn’t think it was an interview so I just talked and joked with the boss. I was then offered a job as a radio DJ, 4 hours on air everyday except Sunday! The boss told me to come back the following Tuesday for a final interview and test. Heck I didn’t even know that our chat was an interview. Read on:

Northern Soul refers to music and dance styles popular in the dancehalls of northern England from the late 1960s. In the beginning, the dancing was athletic, featuring spins, flips, and drops. The music consisted of obscure American soul recordings with a fast beat, very similar to Tamla Motown and rare labels (for example Okeh) along with a several blue beat records. Much of Northern Soul music was recorded in the northern states of the US, although music from the South is not excluded, neither is music that is not strictly “soul”. By 1970, UK artists were recording tunes for this market, and the rarity of soul records with the required rhythm led to the playing of stompers, tunes by any artist that featured the right beat. The term ‘Northern Soul’ was coined by journalist Dave Godin after visiting the Twisted Wheel Club around 1970 for his column in Blues and Soul magazine.
A large proportion of Northern Soul’s original crowd came from the mod movement, with their passion for soul music. As some mods turned moved away from these sounds to embrace the psychedelic movement of the late 1960s, many mods - especially those in northern England - chose to stick to the original soundtrack of soul and ska. Some became what would eventually be known as skinheads, and others went on to form the core of the Northern Soul scene.
Early Northern Soul fashion included US bowling shirts, button-down Ben Sherman shirts, blazers with centre vents and many buttons, Poly-velt shoes, baggy trousers or shrink to fit Levis. Many dancers wore club badges.
The first venue that effectively defined the Northern Soul sound was theTwisted Wheel Club in Manchester. Other early clubs included the Golden Torch in Stoke, the Casino Club in Wigan, Blackpool Mecca, The Catacombs in Wolverhampton, North Park in Kettering, The Mojo and KGB clubs in Sheffield, the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes (still hosting Northern Soul events today), and Va Va’s (where Richard Searling used to DJ).
Northern Soul is possibly the most expensive of musical genres to collect. Hundreds of 7″ vinyl records have broken the
As summer approaches, you may notice things tend to change. People stop wearing pants and begin wearing shorts, wire screens replace glass windows, the aroma of chimney smoke is taken over by the smell of smoke from a barbeque, candy canes are replaced by ears of corn, and the lawn furniture stuffed in your basement and hauled upstairs to the deck. Not immune to the change that summer brings is your music selection. As your Christmas Carols grow dusty in the attic, you may find that your choice in music also changes. Doing away with Jim Brickman’s latest hits, you opt for something a little more punchy, something that fits in with fun in the sun. The following is our list of top five summer songs of all time.
Boys of Summer: Though Don Henley’s 1984 hit makes our selection of best summer songs, it could also make the list of best stalker songs (I’m driving by your house, though I know that you’re not home). Restraining order aside, this is arguably Henley’s best known song without his fine feathered friends. Not only does it remind us of, well, summer days, but it is also a song that reminds us of lost love, something most of us can identify with.
I am the Summertime: This tune may not be well known, nor may the group - Bachelor Number One - who sings it, but there is something appealing about “I am the Summertime,” something that makes it well worth a listen. A little bit pop and a little bit reggae, “I am the Summertime” was featured on the American Pie soundtrack. A song with lyrics that literally introduce you to summer, this is one melody you’ll want to meet.
Playing With the Boys: The female species will likely equate this song with the volleyball scene from Top Gun (volleyball: 20 dollars, swim trunks: 8 dollars, Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer without shirts: priceless). Yet, even the male species can appreciate Kenny Loggin’s summertime hit. “Playing with the Boys” reminds us of youth, something that summer can bring out in anyone. It also reminds us that life is a beach….and then Goose dies.
Margaritaville: If hot chocolate belongs to the winter time, then summer is all about margaritas. A restaurant deck or an apartment balcony, frozen or on the rocks, with friends or by yourself rocking in the corner, margaritas are the perfect summer drink This makes “Margaritaville” the perfect summer song. Even though Jimmy Buffet is “wasted away,” hopefully you will not find yourself in a comparable condition: just be sure to eat a lot of bread.
Summertime: Before Will Smith saved the world from aliens in Independence Day, he drove around in a convertible with DJ Jazzy Jeff singing about a topic atypical of rap: the weather. “Summertime” by Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff is one of the best summer time songs of all time. It’s simple, it’s easy, and it reeks of a sense of lightheartedness, just like summertime should be.
There are a lot of songs sure to appease your listening pleasure. These are just our selection of great tunes for the summer barbecuer in all of us, these songs are music to your ears…of corn.
